Sioma Ngwezi National Park - Zambia Safari Travel Vacations in Africa
Sioma Ngwezi National Park, situated in Zambia's Western province, is one of larger parks in Zambia covering an area of 5000 square kilometers. The area was declared a national park in 1972. The park was a game reserve that was previously managed by the Litunga (king) of the Lozi community. Sioma Ngwezi National Park is surrounded by a 35000 square kilometer Game Management Area. The Park is unfenced allowing free movement of the animals between the park and the Game Management Area and allowing access to the Zambezi River. The Park and surrounding Game Management Area form an important link in the migratory route of elephants from the bordering national parks of Botswana and Namibia. The park also serves as a refuge from elephants from Angola, where poaching are said to exist. Nonetheless, the reduction and possible elimination of poaching stems from the agreement signed under the banner of Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area by surrounding 5 countries - Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe to allow conservation by consolidating areas of common ares parks, reserves and game management area where wildlife flow in and out, in that way all the countries benefit from the existence of wildlife and yet wildlife can be protected/controlled accordingly.
In terms of vegetation, the sandvelt of the Sioma Ngwezi National Park support good stands of teak forest. There are also areas of mopane woodlands and patches of teak mixed with mopane.
In reference to the wildlife, the park is home to a few thousand elephants (population survey not in place), and several endangered species including roan, sable, wild dog and cheetah. Several antelope species are present, but quite shy - mostly puku, impala, roan, sable, zebra and kudu. Most of the wildlife is concentrated around the southwest of the park where the wetlands of the Kwando river exists. The superb connection between the Kwando river is that if flows right into the Okavango river, leading through the desert and allowing for the creating of the Okavango delta.
Unique birdlife is limited apart from the birds seen at other Zambia park. Some birds include the chestnut vented warbler, greater kestrel, Bradfield's hornbill, Birchell's starling, marico sunbird, black- cheeked waxbill.
